Description

If you’re looking for a hike where you can trek through the jungle, swim under waterfalls, scramble over rocks and enjoy breathtaking views, then the 7 Cascades hike, also known as Tamarind Falls, is an absolute must. It’s one of Mauritius’ most stunning natural attractions, accessible only on foot, which is exactly what makes it so special.

Meeting your guide in Henrietta

The hike starts in the small village of Henrietta on the central plateau. Upon arrival, several local “volunteer guides” may approach you offering their services. Simply let them know that you already have a guide, which is completely normal and helps avoid misunderstandings.

Your hike is led by a trained, experienced guide who knows the terrain, the route and all the little tricks for getting down and back up safely.

The route: descending into the valley, waterfall by waterfall

At the beginning of the hike you descend into the valley, which is already an adventure on its own. Expect steeper sections, slippery rocks and tree roots, but you can confidently hold onto the incredibly strong branches of the Chinese guava bushes – nature’s own handrail system.

During the hike you typically visit 5 of the 7 waterfalls, and you can swim in three of them. The natural rock pools offer the perfect refreshment halfway through the trek.

What you’ll see and experience

  • Incredible panoramic views from the edge of the plateau

  • Spectacular waterfalls, each with a unique character

  • Crystal-clear water flowing between volcanic rocks

  • Bamboo forests, ferns and lush tropical greenery

  • Swimming in natural pools, with optional cliff jumps for the brave

  • Rare birds, butterflies and tropical plants everywhere around you

Who do we recommend the 7 Cascades hike for?

The hike is not easy, but children aged 7–8 can complete it with a certified guide and some help from adults. The terrain is varied and sometimes slippery, but not technical. It requires focus and stamina more than extreme physical strength.

This adventure is perfect for nature lovers who don’t mind a bit of climbing and want to cool off under a waterfall in the middle of a jungle trek.

What to bring

  • Closed hiking shoes or sports shoes with good grip

  • Swimwear, towel and quick-drying clothes

  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person, plus a small snack (fruit, energy bar)

  • Sunscreen, hat, mosquito repellent

  • A small backpack for your essentials

Safety and transfers

The hike should only be done with a licensed, experienced guide. Transfers can be arranged from anywhere on the island if needed.

Duration of the hike

The full hike usually takes 3–4 hours, depending on the pace of the group and how long you spend at the waterfalls. Most tours are organised in the morning, but afternoon hikes are also possible – just keep in mind that it gets dark early.
