Description
If you want to experience the wild, lesser-known side of Mauritius in just one day—filled with flavours, scents and dramatic ocean views—this south coast tour is the perfect choice. It’s a full-day scenic journey featuring local rum and vanilla, a waterfall, rugged coastal cliffs and one of the island’s most iconic viewpoints, all with a comfortable private car tour led by an English- or French-speaking driver-guide.
Recommended itinerary
1. La Vanille Nature Park – crocodiles, giant tortoises and lush jungle
Your first stop is La Vanille Nature Park, where you can see massive Nile crocodiles, hundreds of Aldabra giant tortoises and stroll through exotic palms and bamboo forests. A mix of botanical garden and wildlife park, it’s especially popular with children.
2. Saint Aubin – vanilla plantation and rum tasting
After La Vanille, the tour continues to the historic Saint Aubin Estate. Here you’ll visit a vanilla plantation, learn about the curing and processing stages, and taste locally produced rum. There’s also a small botanical garden and a shop with local products—an ideal stop for anyone who loves authentic Mauritian flavours.
3. Rochester Falls – a waterfall carved into green basalt cliffs
Next is the spectacular Rochester Falls, cascading over unique basalt columns into a lush green valley. It’s a short walk from the car park. If you’re lucky, local youths might be jumping into the pool from the top—something of a tradition here. Swimming is possible if conditions allow.
4. Gris-Gris – the wild side of the ocean
From there, you head to one of the most dramatic coastlines in Mauritius. At Gris-Gris, there is no lagoon—just the raw power of the open ocean. Waves crash against the cliffs with impressive force, making it a dream location for photography. Beyond this point lies nothing but sea all the way to Antarctica.
5. Roche Qui Pleure – quick stop at the “Crying Rock”
Nearby is Roche Qui Pleure, where the waves hit the rock in a way that looks as if the cliff is “weeping.” Instead of the old walking trail, this tour includes it as a short scenic stop by car, with the driver taking you close to the viewpoint.
6. Macondé Viewpoint – the iconic southern bend
The day ends at the famous Macondé viewpoint, offering 360-degree views of the winding coastal road and the turquoise ocean. A short staircase leads to the lookout point, and it’s no surprise that this is one of the most photographed places in Mauritius.
Useful tips
-
Bring sunscreen, hat, water and comfortable shoes. Gris-Gris can be very sunny and the rocky areas require stable footwear.
-
Cash and card are both recommended—Saint Aubin and some local vendors accept both, but not everywhere has a card terminal.
-
Swimwear is useful for Rochester Falls, although swimming depends on weather conditions.
-
The route is flexible. If you’re staying on the west side, the tour can start from the Macondé side as well.
Who is this tour for?
This south coast tour is ideal for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts and foodies. The pace is relaxed, the stops are varied and the route is not physically demanding, making it a great choice for families with children and older travellers as well.
