Description
If you’re dreaming of spending a picture-perfect day in Mauritius, the Ile aux Cerfs boat trip is exactly what you’re looking for. This east-coast excursion is ideal for all ages: beach time, water activities, a unique waterfall, monkeys and a relaxing island BBQ, all packed into one unforgettable day that showcases the calmer, postcard-worthy side of Mauritius.
Program itinerary
1. Departure from Trou d’Eau Douce – an easy, comfortable start
The boat trip begins in the charming coastal village of Trou d’Eau Douce on the east coast. This tour doesn’t start at dawn, so you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast. It’s recommended to arrive at the pier between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. Transfers from your accommodation are available on request, especially convenient for families or those staying on the opposite side of the island.
2. Ile aux Cerfs – 1.5 to 2 hours of island time
After a short boat ride, you arrive at one of Mauritius’ most iconic islands, Ile aux Cerfs, where you’ll spend 1.5 to 2 hours. Everyone finds something to love here:
– Rent sunbeds and enjoy the white sandy beach
– Join a snorkelling tour at a nearby reef (optional, extra cost)
– Try parasailing over the lagoon (optional)
– Stop for a refreshing cocktail at the bar
– Or simply relax and swim in the shallow, child-friendly lagoon
3. GRSE Waterfall – a rare view from the water
After relaxing on the island, the boat continues to the Grand River South East (GRSE) waterfall. This is one of the few waterfalls in Mauritius best viewed from the water, and seeing it up close from below is truly unique. Along the riverbanks you may spot wild macaque monkeys – charming, but avoid feeding them, especially if travelling with children.
4. Lunch on Ile de L’Est – BBQ and drinks
The final stop is the peaceful Ile de L’Est, where a traditional Mauritian BBQ awaits you. Grilled chicken, fish, salads and fresh bread are served generously, along with soft drinks, beer, wine and local rum. The lagoon here is particularly calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with small children to swim or walk along the shore.
Useful tips for the Ile aux Cerfs boat trip
-
Sunscreen, hat and towels are essential – the open water sun can be strong, and shade is limited.
-
Wear or bring swimwear, as swimming opportunities start early in the program.
-
Monkeys are sometimes present on the island and near the waterfall – do not feed them, and avoid letting children eat near them.
-
Bring cash or a card if you’d like to try extra activities (parasailing, snorkelling tour, bar).
Who do we recommend this tour for?
This tour is a relaxing, nature-focused adventure, perfect for those who want to enjoy boating, swimming and gentle exploration of the east coast without rushing.
It’s especially ideal for families with young children thanks to the calm lagoon, but couples and groups of friends will also enjoy a full, easygoing day on one of Mauritius’ most beautiful coasts.
