Description
If you want to explore Mauritius’ vibrant capital, its famous beaches and lush tropical gardens all in one day, the North Tour is the perfect choice. This comfortable full-day road trip includes an English- or French-speaking driver-guide and combines city sights, cultural highlights and scenic coastal stops.
North Tour – Proposed Itinerary
1. Port Louis – Market, Le Caudan Waterfront & Citadel
Your tour begins in Port Louis, the bustling capital of Mauritius. The Central Market (bazaar) is full of colour, spices, local products and handicrafts. Afterwards, enjoy a walk along the Caudan Waterfront, lined with shops, cafés and artisan stalls. If time allows, you’ll also visit the historic Citadel fortress, offering 360-degree views over the city and ocean.
2. Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
Next, the tour continues north to the famous Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. This is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere and home to more than 500 plant species – including giant water lilies, spice trees and exotic flora. You can explore on your own or take a guided tour on-site.
3. Trou aux Biches & Mont Choisy – Beach photo stop
Traveling through the northwest coast, you’ll pass two of Mauritius’ most beautiful beaches. With powdery white sand, palm trees and calm lagoon water, Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy are ideal for a quick photo stop or a refreshing coconut from a local vendor.
4. Grand Baie & Grand Baie Bazaar
The next stop is the lively resort town of Grand Baie, perfect for a short walk, shopping or a coffee by the ocean. The Grand Baie Bazaar is a great place to find souvenirs, clothing and local crafts – and yes, bargaining is welcome.
5. Cap Malheureux – the red-roof church
The final stop is the iconic Cap Malheureux, home to Mauritius’ famous red-roofed church, Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice. From the church grounds you’ll enjoy a stunning view of Coin de Mire island – one of the most photographed spots on the island.
Practical Tips for the North Tour
• Bring mosquito repellent, especially for the botanical garden.
• Carry some cash for markets and small vendors; larger shops and entrance fees usually accept cards.
• Dress respectfully when visiting the church in Cap Malheureux (shoulders and knees covered if entering).
• Keep an eye on valuables at markets and bazaars, and always ask prices beforehand. Bargaining is normal – just keep it friendly!
