Description

If you want to discover the green heart of Mauritius, its hidden waterfalls, volcanic landscapes and spiritual landmarks, the South Tour is made for you! This full-day programme is a comfortable guided trip by car, with an English- or French-speaking driver who also acts as your guide throughout the day. Along the route, you’ll enjoy not only stunning scenery but also local stories, legends and flavours that make the experience truly memorable.

Planned Itinerary for the South Tour

1. Bois Chéri Tea Factory & Plantation (optional first stop)
Your day can begin at the Bois Chéri Tea Factory, where a guided tour reveals how Mauritian tea is made from harvest to teacup. The visit ends at a panoramic tasting terrace where you can sample a variety of flavoured teas. If you love tea, this is a must — especially in the morning!

2. Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) – the sacred Hindu lake
One of Mauritius’ most significant spiritual sites, Grand Bassin is surrounded by temples and giant statues of Hindu deities. Walking along this volcanic crater lake offers a deep insight into the local Hindu community. According to tradition, the lake is spiritually connected to India — especially the Ganges.

3. Alexandra Falls Viewpoint
Your next stop is a hidden yet spectacular corner of Black River Gorges National Park. From this lookout point you can admire the Alexandra Waterfall cascading between lush green mountains. After a short photo break, the tour continues to the next natural highlight.

4. Black River Gorges Viewpoint
An iconic viewpoint offering dramatic sights of Mauritius’ mountainous southwest: emerald ridges, deep valleys and distant ocean views. Your guide will also tell you about the rare flora and fauna that make this area so special.

5. Chamarel – Seven Colored Earth Geopark & Waterfall
The Chamarel Geopark is a geological wonder, famous for its multi-coloured dunes formed millions of years ago. In the same park you’ll also find the Chamarel Waterfall — plunging over 80 metres into a lush forest valley. A breathtaking sight, especially after the rainy season!

6. Chamarel Rum Distillery (optional, often visited at the end)
If rum is more your style, you can end your day with a visit to the Chamarel Rum Distillery. A guided tour shows how premium Mauritian rum is made from sugarcane, followed by a tasting session with several varieties. Chamarel rums are internationally acclaimed — don’t miss the chance to try them.
